Sword of Valor

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

The sword of valor is imbued with holy power. This power makes the weapon good-aligned and thus bypasses the corresponding damage reduction. It deals an extra d6 points of damage for each plus against all of evil alignment. It bestows one negative level on any evil creature attempting to wield it. The negative level remains as long as the sword is in hand and disappears when the weapon is no longer wielded. This negative level never results in actual level loss, but it cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells) while the sword is wielded.

Moderate evocation [good]; CL 7th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, holy smite, creator must be good; Price: 1,000 for a +1 bonus, 100,000 for a +5 bonus.

This +2 adamantine shield is adorned with an embossed symbol of an ankh. Three times per day as a free action, the mantra of valor (“ra”) can be intoned to deal an additional 2d6 points of lightning damage on the next successful attack, a bolt that emanates from the ankh.

Moderate conjuration; CL 10th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, lightning bolt; Price 9,170 gp; Cost 4,670 gp + 360 XP.

3 days to GenCon

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

In three days, we’ll be heading off to GenCon, 4+ days of non-stop gaming in the heart of Indiana.  For those of you who will be there, look for us at the Con.   We’ll be running Tower of Gygax on Thursday night, finding Spirit of the Century games to jump into, walking the 4e floor, hanging with the Rogue Judges, and searching for playtesters for our games, including a 4e Battletech conversion.

See you there!

Boots of Compassion

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

“Try walking in my shoes.”

These boots appear to be large goth boots, with somewhat frayed lining due to previous owners wearing them down.  While worn, these boots grant an increased understanding of the situations of those around them.  Sense motive checks will receive a +5 bonus.  In addition, the wearer receives a +5 bonus to perceive those in need, for instance, noticing a child in distress or a lost villager curled up behind a grove of trees.

Faint transmutation; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item, Price 2,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

Ring of Honesty

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

This weightless, dull metallic ring appears in tarnished hues of gold, white gold, platinum, silver, or any other metal of the Realms.  The rings occasionally contain a setting of a semi-precious stone for adornment and/or to affect improved results.  The wearer receives a -5 penalty to all attempts to bluff or otherwise speak deceptively while wearing the ring.  These rings are often required of politicians, merchants, children, and the accused in lands that favor honest dealings.

Often these rings are slipped onto fingers by those who wish to engage in deals with those who do not trust them.  Though arguably an untrustworthy act itself, this is an effective one, analogous to employing a truth serum in this world.  The weightlessness of the ring enables this application of its power.

Price: 1,500gp, Craft Wondrous Item, zone of truth.

Aldric Tréburne

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Older brother of Kilmore Tréburne, Aldric stayed home to care for the ailing family while Kilmore went forth in search of adventure. Now that the family is stabilized, thanks to Avandra’s blessings, Aldric has now left home in search of his brother and his own adventure.

Along the way, he has met up with an eldarin war wizard and traveled from town to town, lending healing powers and fighting off brigands and ferocious wolves.

A playful, yet grounded, working-class elf, Aldric has developed many talents, though none that he pursues with more passion than his faith in Avandra, and healing in her name. he has been called too humorous for serious elven service, and too ill-mannered to ever represent his people abroad, so his only hope is in following his own dreams and desires.

He maintains his own gear, but is not too proud to ask for help in repairing or caring for it. His most prized possessions are a pair of ornate, buckled catgrace boots, a finely-carved shortbow +1 thunderburst, and his holy symbol of Faith to Avandra (+1d6 healing).

In addition, he wears a suit of chainmail with a small cape and carries an adventurer’s kit in a backpack.

Aldric in your game: Aldric tells a decent tale, and with his diplomacy will likely have learned some things about the local area. As a healer, he is likely to have learned much of the recent adventurers of others. Aldric could serve as an NPC in a party that did not have a player in the leader role. He would allow the DM to give the party some extra healing without having a character overly bent on seeing his own will done.

Horror of the Old Ones Released!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

After almost two years in the conception, writing, playtesting, and re-writing, Unicorn Rampant is proud to release Horror of the Old ones, a 56-page module for 10th level characters.

In the dying port town of Onuago, troubles deeper than the recent economic decline loom over the horizon. Baron Stieglitz has locked himself in his castle to the northeast while his captains vie for control of his lands. Children have been born with strange deformities. A mysterious cult has corrupted the priest of the logging town to the northwest. And beneath the rocky island in the bay a horror beyond imagining slumbers as though dead, dreaming of destruction and of the void.

Horror of the Old Ones is a site based, event-driven d20 fantasy adventure with elements of horror for 10th level characters.

This multi-part adventure is inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft, though the authors have worked to keep the ideas true to the realm of d20 fantasy. These locations are not meant to derive from New England settings, think of them instead as extensions of whatever campaign world you the storyteller wish to place them in.

This is what we’ve been up to this month, dear reader!

Gil Devine

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Gil has traveled around certain locations within the Republic of Esrun, often finding the need to leave the city under questionable circumstances. Luckily for her, her adventuresome spirit is always looking for a new place in which to venture, so this suits her.

Gil is a liar and a cheat, and that’s why so many men like her. She is as aggressive a person as you’ll ever meet, but not always (in fact, rarely) to your benefit. Unless you’re on her good side, she’ll leave you with a lighter purse at every encounter. And she rarely lets anyone onto her good side. It’s a matter of survival, you know?

Her favorite activity is employing forgery and disguise to her benefit, but she’ll settle for a good old fashioned pickpocketing anyday!
